Defend Aotearoa’s Farms: Say No to GE Deregulation
At Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ), we believe in a future where our land, food, and farmers thrive harmoniously with nature. But right now, that future is under threat. The New Zealand government is fast-tracking plans to deregulate genetic engineering (GE) by 2025, which could have irreversible consequences for our environment, food systems, and economy.
What’s at Stake?
GE deregulation could allow genetically engineered crops to be grown in an open environment with little oversight. This change could:
Endanger the integrity of New Zealand’s global reputation.
Cross-pollinate with non-GE / organic farms, threatening farmers’ livelihoods and consumer choices.
Expose farms to increased pesticide use and herbicide-resistant plants.
Why We Must Act Now
Time is running out. If we don’t act, these changes will impact every aspect of our food system, from the soil we farm to the food we eat. Consumers may lose the right to choose GE-free, organic food, and farmers could become dependent on multinational corporations for costly GE seeds and chemicals.
How We’re Fighting Back
We are launching a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the risks posed by GE deregulation. Here’s how we’ll make an impact:
Educate the Public: We will inform New Zealanders about the dangers of deregulating GE through media outreach, digital content, and events.
Mobilise Communities: We will activate communities across Aotearoa to push back and demand more transparency from the government.
Advocate for Farmers: We will hold this government accountable and protect farmers’ right to choose GE-free farming practices.
Protect Consumer Rights: We will advocate for consumers’ right to know what’s in their food and protect their ability to choose GE-free and organic options.
Join Us in This Fight
We cannot do this alone. Your support will help us fund this critical campaign, ensuring that we reach as many people as possible with the truth about GE. Every dollar you donate will help us protect Aotearoa New Zealand’s food system, environment, and economy
