Open to OANZ Council members including individual and sector members.

ORGANIC ACTION DAY:

It’s time for change! Since the launch of the 2022-25 Organic Sector Strategy ‘Taking Action for a Better New Zealand’ was launched late last year, Sector volunteers have met regularly to drive forward the key projects. Today each group will form a panel, present their work to date and engage the audience in a discussion about the future.

Join us for this crucial moment and together we can drive forward the growth of organics in Aotearoa.

  • Enjoy a cup of organic tea or coffee provided by our member, IncaFe, plus an opportunity to network.

  • With Chris Morrison (Chairperson) and Dr Jessica Hutchings (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Huirapa, Gujarati)

  • Today's Action Day is an opportunity to hear from each of the groups, to learn about the goals, roadmaps, accomplishments and next steps.

There will be an opportunity to answer questions and workshop ideas to help support the group at the end of each presentation.

Each strategy action session is 45 minutes long.

  • Group Objective: There are a number of existing farmer extension programmes that are providing significant benefits to farmers. Of particular note to the organic sector is Quorum Sense’s focus on regenerative agriculture, which has extended to organic growers.

There is an opportunity to create an organic specific programme that focuses on solutions specific to organic agriculture. Farmers participating in the regional strategy workshops identified the need to better connect with other farmers, drawing on the diverse talents that exist across the sector.

    Panellists:
Jon Manhire, Managing Director, The AgriBusiness Group
Christina Robinson, Global Extension Lead - Sustainability, Zespri International

  • Group Objective: Although certifiers maintain lists of organic inputs on their websites, there is a broader need for information for organic practice advisors and producers on how to become organic or Certified organic. A range of resources are currently available that would benefit from being localised and more easily accessible.

    Panellists:
    Malkiat Singh, Owner, Kingseat Organics
Pete Huggins, General Manager, Soil & Health Association of New Zealand

  • Nosh catering has developed an outstanding lunch for the day including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and carnivorous delights.

  • Group objective: New Zealand’s farmer levy organisations are responsible for much of the innovation in, and the support of, the agricultural sector. There is an opportunity to pool resources for mutual goals, especially those that support regenerative and organic principles and sustainability outcomes.

    Panellists:
Edwin Massey, GM Sustainability, New Zealand Winegrowers
Clive Dougall, Chair, Organic Winegrowers New Zealand

  • Group objective: Regular organic purchasers make up 10% of the shopping population in New Zealand. Research undertaken for the strategy indicates that propensity to purchase increases with knowledge of organic farming practices. Millennials are internationally recognised as having the most concern about the world’s environmental predicament and are also the group most likely to purchase organic products.

    Panellist:
Robyn Vickery, Marketing & Communications Manager, BioGro New Zealand

    Katherine Dewar, Managing Director, GoodSense

  • Karen Mapusua is the President of IFOAM Organics International and works for the Pacific Community in agricultural development, based in Fiji and serving 22 Pacific Island states.

She has a background in NGO capacity building and management and has worked in rural development in the Pacific islands region for close to 20 years with a focus on organic agriculture as a path to social and economic development.

We are privileged to have Karen join us as she talks about IFOAM’s strategy with an emphasis on activity in the Pacific/ Oceania region.

  • Jessica lives on a small whānau food farm in Kaitoke, North of Wellington and is Hua Parakore verified. She has been working at the crossroads of Indigenous knowledge, whānau and environmental wellbeing for the last three decades. She has been a member of Te Waka Kai Ora - Māori Organics Network for 20 years and was involved in the development of the Hua Parakore system, the first Indigenous Validation and Verification system for Kai Atua- Pure Food.

  • Group objective: New Zealand is the only country that exports most of its organic production at around 58%. By contrast, Australia exports 26%, Denmark 19%, Sweden 10% and the US less than 2%.

The Organic Products Bill will be an important instrument in growing and maintaining New Zealand’s organic trade arrangements.

    Panellists:
    Derek Broadmore, OANZ Advisory Board
    MPI Organic Regime team members

  • Let’s bring it all together and plan next steps.

  • Join us and enjoy a glass of organic wine or local beer and toast the successes of the Organic Sector so far in 2022.
