Foodstuffs is one of New Zealand’s biggest grocery retailers, employing more than 30,000 people nationwide. Proudly 100% Kiwi owned and operated, brands including Pak n' Save, New World and Four Square are all under Foodstuffs’ umbrella.

With a commitment to providing New Zealanders with healthy and affordable food, Foodstuffs chose to support the OANZ 2020/21 New Zealand Organic Sector Market Report as a platinum sponsor. The Market Report explores the growth of the New Zealand organic market by capturing the current state of the domestic market across the entire supply chain.

Here, Dominic Quin, Group General Manager at Foodstuffs Marketing and CX, shares his thoughts on Aotearoa’s growing organic market.

As a platinum sponsor, why is the market report so important?

The OANZ market report is important to Foodstuffs, as it aligns with our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) pillars. Under our pillars, we’re committed to providing New Zealanders with healthy and affordable food and leading in sustainability. The market report aligns with our CSR commitment’s as organic foods contribute to enabling New Zealanders to live active and healthy lifestyles.

As a business it’s also important that we support local suppliers who are committed to providing New Zealanders with access to healthy, sustainably produced, organic product.

How has the organic market changed for you over the last five years?

Over the past few years we’ve seen consumers take a more proactive approach to learning about the origins of where their food comes from. We’re seeing customers increasingly look for products that are grown locally and sustainably sourced.

Our Foodstuffs COVID-19 research found that Climate change is still a front-of-mind issue for many New Zealanders, causing a shift in what shoppers are regularly consuming and spending their money on. Growing concerns around the environment has seen a new range of products come through, and a rise in organic based products classed as better for you and the planet. From dairy products, fresh produce and health foods, the organic product market continues to grow as consumers become more educated on such issues.

Where do you think the organic market is heading and how do you plan to be a part of it?

With the organic market growing, we’re actively working with our suppliers to ensure that we’re providing a range of products best suited to our customer’s needs. During COVID-19, Foodstuffs conducted some research to see where customers priorities are and found that over 50% of people surveyed were worried about their overall health and wellbeing. We also found that customers are hoping to combat their concerns by consuming more fresh fruit and veges and by exercising more. As a company, we’re always looking at customer trends so we can make sure we are doing everything possible to meet their needs and help them in-store.
