OANZ August Buzz

Kia ora tātou from the Chair

2021 has been a particularly busy year for OANZ. With the Market Report behind us and the Organic Products Bill continuing through its process, we have now moved our focus to the Organic Sector Strategy. Thanks to all of you that attended workshops and participated in this process. I was fortunate to be able to join face to face meetings in both Christchurch and Dunedin, as well as the Zoom workshop. The level of passion for the sector was heartening and it showed the value of getting together face to face to discuss our common interests and debate those areas where we may have differences.

I hope to see many of you at the Organic Sector's events in Wellington on September 10th and 11th. Tiffany Tompkins, our Vice Chair, along with her team are setting up a great couple of days. Please support our Sector and join in.

I read with interest the Commerce Commission investigation into supermarkets. What does this mean for Organic growers, producers, retailers, and consumers? My ongoing concern is consumers understanding the true cost of food. What are the hidden costs/benefits of growing for example a certified regenerative organic head of broccoli verses a conventionally (for lack of a better word) grown head of broccoli? Wouldn’t it be good if we could externalise the costs different growing methods had on food including water, soil, climate change and human health?

I look forward to seeing you in September.

ORGANIC SECTOR STRATEGY

Thank you to the over 200 of you who participated in our Sector Strategy Workshops. We received an abundance of feedback highlighting priorities, constraints and opportunities.

Everyone who participated in the workshops has been given access to the workshop overviews, white paper comparing several international organic strategies, notes and links to other strategies not included in the paper, and Viv's presentation. OANZ Members may also find this information in the Members Portal.

Next Steps

The Strategy Leadership Group met last week to determine a clear strategic direction for the organics sector based on workshop findings and industry data.

The strategy will then be written and launched at the OANZ Organic Regenerative Conference at the Boatshed in Wellington on 10 September.

Everyone is invited to be a part of this event and we welcome you to get your ticket as soon as possible. Ticket sales cover event costs only.

An exciting position has opened up within the BioGro Board of Directors, and would be an incredible opportunity for a passionate individual who can contribute to the effective governance of BioGro NZ.

The Board of Directors currently consists of two appointees from the Soil & Health National Council, two Independent Directors, and two Industry Representatives with experience across horticulture, inputs, cropping and retail. BioGro hopes to expand industry representation, by seeking a candidate from the Dairy Sector.

You can find full details within the Job Description. Feel free to pass this on to someone you think would fit this role perfectly, as BioGro will also be distributing this to the wider organic network.

If this sounds like something you could be interested in, send your CV and Cover Letter through to BioGro Chair, Joseph Stuart.

APPLY FOR RESEARCH FUNDING

Do you have an innovative idea that could create real change for Kiwi farmers? Rural professionals are encouraged to team up with farmers to apply for $75,000 funding to rapidly test smart ideas and share the results.

The Rural Professionals Fund, established in 2020 by the Our Land and Water National Science Challenge, is now accepting applications for a second round of funding to support projects that could benefit farming communities.

“We need to encourage more ‘mavericks’ to test smart ideas that challenge our patterns of behaviour,” says Stephen Macaulay, chief executive of the New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Managers (NZIPIM), a key partner in the fund.
